New rice varieties, a success in Sarpang

The cultivation of two new rice varieties has been successful in Sarpang. The seedlings were distributed to the people of Shompangkha Geog in 2007 on trial basis.

These are IR 72102 and KARJAT–3. It was cultivated by the farmers of Darjeythang village under Shompangkha Geog.

These two new rice varieties give double the yield of the local varieties. Champa, the local rice variety produced 1,000 Kg of rice from an acre of land where as the new variety produced more than 2,200 Kg per acre. The new rice variety is also resistant to diseases.

On Firday, officials from the renewable natural resource research centre in Bajo, the Bhur sub-research centre, dzongkhag agriculture sector and about 50 farmers from five Geogs in Sarpang visited Shompangkha.

The new rice varieties were from the International rice research institute in the Philippines.
